Bioethanol production from coconut husk fiber Ciência Rural
Cabral,Mirelle Márcio Santos; Abud,Ana Karla de Souza; Silva,Carlos Eduardo de Farias; Almeida,Renata Maria Rosas Garcia.
ABSTRACT: Population growth and the increasing search for healthy foods have led to a major consumption of coconut water and, hence, to an environmental impact caused by the inappropriate disposal of green coconut husks. This lignocellulosic biomass has deserved attention of researchers concerning the seeking of new usages, as, for example, in renewable fuels production technologies. This study examines the potential of green coconut husk fibers as a feedstock for the production of bioethanol. The coconut fibers were pretreated through an alkaline method, hydrolyzed enzymatically and submitted to ethanol fermentation with commercial yeasts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Despite the significant loss of cellulose (4.42% in relation to the fiber and 17.9%...

Changes in chemical attributes of a Fluvent cultivated with castor bean and irrigated with wastewater AGRIAMBI
Barreto,Aurelir N.; Nascimento,Joab J. V. R. do; Medeiros,Everaldo P. de; Nóbrega,Janiny A. da; Bezerra,Jose R. C..
Agricultural use of wastewater is an alternative to increase water availability, especially in semiarid regions. However, it may cause undesirable chemical changes in the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of wastewater irrigation and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) cultivation on the chemical attributes of a Fluvic Neosol. The experimental design was in a randomized block, in split-plot scheme, where the main plots were represented by the treatments of irrigation water and castor bean cultivation, and the subplots were the soil layers, with three replications. The treatments were T1 - wastewater irrigation + castor bean cultivation ; T2 - mixture of supply water and wastewater (1:1 ratio) + castor bean cultivation; T3 - supply...

Effects of Ignoring Survey Design Information for Data Reuse ArchiMer
Foster, Scott D.; Vanhatalo, Jarno; Trenkel, Verena; Schulz, Torsti; Lawrence, Emma; Przeslawski, Rachel; Hosack, Geoffrey R..
Data are currently being used, and reused, in ecological research at an unprecedented rate. To ensure appropriate reuse however, we need to ask the question: “Are aggregated databases currently providing the right information to enable effective and unbiased reuse?” We investigate this question, with a focus on designs that purposefully favour the selection of sampling locations (upweighting the probability of selection of some locations). These designs are common and examples are those designs that have uneven inclusion probabilities or are stratified. We perform a simulation experiment by creating datasets with progressively more uneven inclusion probabilities, and examine the resulting estimates of the average number of individuals per unit area...

Microbiological and physicochemical treatments applied to metallurgic industry aiming water reuse BABT
Bello,Antonio Roberto Crystal; Angelis,Dejanira de Franceschi de; Domingos,Roberto Naves.
A study was conducted on the reuse of the water in a system composed of a sewage treatment plant (STP) using prolonged aeration with activated sludge and a compact water treatment plant (CWTP) in a metallurgic industry. The processes for obtaining the water for reuse were microbiological and physicochemical. The domestic sewage was then pumped to the STP, where biological flocks were formed and clarified water was obtained. The efficiency of the microbiological process in the STP was evaluated for removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and sedimentary solids (SS). The efficiency of physicochemical processes for clarifying the water and disinfection was evaluated through analysis of pH, turbidity, color, aerobic...

Optimizing the operational conditions of a membrane bioreactor used for domestic wastewater treatment BABT
Viana,Priscilla Zuconi; Nobrega,Ronaldo; Jordão,Eduardo Pacheco; Azevedo,José Paulo Soares de.
This study evaluated the performance of a sidestream membrane module combined with an aeration system for the treatment of municipal wastewater. To investigate the membrane's behavior and to control fouling, trials in laboratory units were conducted. In these tests, optimal values were established for some operational parameters, such as crossflow velocity, transmembrane pressure and air supply to continuously flush the membrane surface. Air supply improved the behavior of the permeate flux over time. After six hours operation, the stabilized flux was 35 L/m².h at a total pressure of 0.40 bar (wastewater pressure of 0.05 bar and air pressure of 0.35 bar) and Reynolds Number of 4,600. All permeate samples analyzed indicated absence of fecal coliform and...

Performance of drippers in two filtering systems using sewage treatment effluent AGRIAMBI
Dalri,Alexandre B.; Santos,Gilmar O.; Dantas,Geffson de F.; Faria,Rogério T. de; Zanini,José R.; Palaretti,Luiz F..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of three models of drippers using treated sewage effluent, pure and diluted, and two types of filters, screen and disc. The treated sewage effluent used in the experiment was collected from the city’s treatment plant. The experiment included 12 lateral lines with three types of emitters to apply pure (100%) and diluted (50%) effluent filtered by screen and disc filters. The combination of those factors set the treatments: T1 (50% effluent diluted in fresh water filtered by a screen filter); T2 (50% effluent diluted in fresh water filtered by a disc filter); T3 (pure effluent filtered by a screen filter); T4 (pure effluent filtered by a disc filter). The results showed that the flat type...

Reuse water and urban horticulture: alliance towards more sustainable cities Horticultura Brasileira
Bizari,Douglas R; Cardoso,Jean C.
ABSTRACT The need to rethink current models of using water resources in the various sectors of human activity is escalating, as thousands of people in different regions of the world are suffering from clean water shortage for their basic daily needs. In this context, the use of recycled water from treated domestic sewage in agricultural activities is gaining ground. Reuse water can combine environmental protection and high agricultural productivity, especially for simultaneously carrying plant nutrients and minimizing demands for catching "noble" fresh water from streams and water sources for irrigation, currently the highest water consuming activity. The increasing urbanization contributes to generate, but also to foster the treatment and use of...

STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL IN THE ASSESSMENT OF DRIP IRRIGATION USING WASTEWATER REA
Acuña Chinchilla,Sisgo R.; Silva,Ênio F. de F. e; Almeida,Ceres D. G. C. de; Silva,Alexsandro O. da; Santos,Patrício R. dos.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate drip irrigation as a process, by monitoring the average flow applied by the emitter using tools of statistical quality control. Four kinds of drippers were selected, two inline labyrinth type and two online where one of the inline emitters was not self-compensating and the other, self-compensating emitter. The system was installed in the field and tested for 85 hours, using three kinds of treated domestic sewage effluents and tap water. The system was under statistical control when the emitters were new, however none of the drippers reaches the manufacturer's specification for average flow. The online drippers showed more dispersion for individual flow measurements and the non-self-compensating inline dripper...

The Value of Reducing Cancer Risks at Contaminated Sites: Are More Heavily Exposed People Willing to Pay More? AgEcon
Tonin, Stefania; Alberini, Anna; Turvani, Margherita.
We use conjoint choice questions to investigate people’s tastes for cancer risk reductions and income in the context of public programs that would provide for remediation at abandoned industrial contaminated sites. Our survey was self-administered using the computer by persons living in the vicinity of an important contaminated site on the Italian National Priority List. The value of a prevented case of cancer is €2.6 million, but this figure does vary with income, perceived exposure to contaminants, and opinions about priorities that should be pursued by cleanup programs.

Use of cassava wastewater treated anaerobically with alkaline agents as fertilizer for maize (Zea mays L.) BABT
Ribas,Maria Magdalena Ferreira; Cereda,Marney Pascoli; Villas Bôas,Roberto Lyra.
The wastewater of the processing of cassava's flour (manipueira) was submitted to the anaerobic treatment in two phases: acidogenic and methanogenic. In the acidogenic phase, the wastewater was stabilized with NaOH (ASH) and with limestone (ASL). After that, both stabilized effluents were treated by a methanogenic reactor. Then, the effluent of the methanogenic reactor was used as fertilizer on maize in the initial growth stage (30 days), cultivated in pots in a greenhouse. The treatments were T1: control without urea addition (only N from soil); T2: NPK (2.2 g of urea with 45% of N); T3: ASH (84 mL.kg soil-1); T4: ASL (102 mL.kg soil-1); T5: double dose ASH (168 mL.kg soil-1) and T6: double dose ASL (204 mL.kg soil-1). Each treatment was composed by 4...

Use of maize cob for production of particleboard Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Scatolino,Mário Vanoli; Silva,Danillo Wisky; Mendes,Rafael Farinassi; Mendes,Lourival Marin.
Agricultural residues are materials generated in large quantities in Brazil and can accumulate to such extent as to cause environmental problems. Among agricultural residues, maize cob is one worthy of notice, and an alternative use for maize cob would be to produce particleboard panels in association with wood particles. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using maize cob for production of particleboard panels. The following maize cob percentages were used: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, in association with particles of Pinus oocarpa wood. Panels were made with 8% of urea formaldehyde and 1% of paraffin (based on dry weight of particles). For compressing the panels, a pressure of 3.92 MPa was applied at a temperature of 160º C, for 8 minutes....
